Traveling throughout the United Kingdom, they immersed themselves in the legend, creating art inspired by and about the ethos of King Arthur.

Dividing Colors
UVU Art & Design

This book is part of an ongoing Fine Art Book Series involving students and faculty in the Art & Design department at Utah Valley University. Here you will see a sampling of work culled from thousands of images both drawn and photographed. The design and assembly of these books comprise an entire year of work and represent well over ten thousand man-hours. The process that brought about the images in the pages of this book represents all the questions, passion, and promise that are present in provocative visual exploration. For more than thirty Art & Design students, it also represents discord. We experienced more discussion, conflict, and disagreement than the three prior books combined making it the most difficult to resolve.

This project started as a look back at the history of the Civil War. As events have played out in the past few years, it expanded to include slavery and the subsequent quest for civil rights. Few in the group had knowledge of this area beyond history books, documentaries, and news releases. For some, the Civil War, slavery, and the fight for civil rights were just memories of a far-removed sullied past. For others, all the sins and bigotry and hate south of the Mason Dixon line never left. Visualizing the chaos and dissension of battlefields, experiencing the legacy of slavery and civil rights, as well as interacting with many individuals whose heritage is intertwined in this history helped to contextualize and inform the students and their work as they explored these topics.

So many varied experiences, thoughts, ideas, and reactions to the circumstances leading up to and following the Civil War led to many questions. Morally, how could one human enslave another? Who are the heroes and who are the villains? Can hearts be softened and wrongs righted? Are we as a country, still divided? How can conflict that started before the United States began and still seems without conclusion, be summed up in so few pages? We determined it could not be and in the process far more questions were raised than answered.

Thus, the book, like the conflicts it covers, explores issues yet unresolved. Issues that are essential to be collectively improved upon to keep progressing as humans and Americans.

Uncommon Ground
UVU Art & Design

Uncommon Ground, The National Park Service – 100 Years in Utah

“Utah is the home to five National Parks: Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion. Often, and understandably, lost in the grandeur of what are collectively known as the Big Five. Utah also hosts seven National Monuments, a National Historic Site, and National Recreation Area. In the United States, only two states boast more.”

“On August 25, 1916 President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Park Service Organic Act, co-sponsored by Utah Senator Reed Smoot, into law. This act created the National Parks Service to manage existing national parks and monuments and protect future locations as well. One hundred years later, we celebrate the foresight of preserving these national treasures.”

“To honor this centennial, Utah Valley University art students and faculty chose to focus specifically on Utah’s 13 national parks and monuments managed by the National Parks Service. . . Driving over 7,800 miles and amassing over 50 days in the NPS sites, we were exposed to broad contrasts in topography, weather, and especially visitors. Some were loud, some reverent. Some snapped up souvenirs while others snapped selfies. Languages mixed in a culture of collecting memories of America’s best idea. The world came to Utah to experience what we sometimes take for granted.”

The Western Front
100 Years Later
UVU Art & Design

The Western Front – 100 Years Later is a collaborative production of the students and faculty within Utah Valley University’s Art & Design department. In concert with the centennial of the start of the First World War, and with assistance from the American Battle Monuments Commission, students and faculty created imagery as they traveled along areas of the western front. They then paired the art with verse that was written by soldiers in the trenches or their loved ones at home during the war. Measuring 10.25 by 10.25 inches, this limited edition fine art book contains 190 photographs and illustrations within its beautifully designed 176 pages.

All proceeds from the purchase of this book will be used to publish similar fine art collections annually. This enables the Art & Design department to continue to provide the highest level of engaged learning opportunities including our current project to celebrate the National Park Service’s centennial by spotlighting Utah’s uncommon national treasures.

The Happiness Advantage
How a Positive…
Shawn Achor

The Happiness Advantage: How a Positive Brain Fuels Success in Work and Life

Our most commonly held formula for success is broken.

Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we’ll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around.

When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. This isn’t just an empty mantra. This discovery has been repeatedly borne out by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience, management studies, and the bottom lines of organizations around the globe.

In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor, who spent over a decade living, researching, and lecturing at Harvard University, draws on his own research—including one of the largest studies of happiness and potential at Harvard and others at companies like UBS and KPMG—to fix this broken formula. Using stories and case studies from his work with thousands of Fortune 500 executives in 42 countries, Achor explains how we can reprogram our brains to become more positive in order to gain a competitive edge at work.

Isolating seven practical, actionable principles that have been tried and tested everywhere from classrooms to boardrooms, stretching from Argentina to Zimbabwe, he shows us how we can capitalize on the Happiness Advantage to improve our performance and maximize our potential. Among the principles he outlines:

• The Tetris Effect: how to retrain our brains to spot patterns of possibility, so we can see—and seize—opportunities wherever we look.

• The Zorro Circle: how to channel our efforts on small, manageable goals, to gain the leverage to gradually conquer bigger and bigger ones.

• Social Investment: how to reap the dividends of investing in one of the greatest predictors of success and happiness—our social support network

A must-read for everyone trying to excel in a world of increasing workloads, stress, and negativity, The Happiness Advantage isn’t only about how to become happier at work. It’s about how to reap the benefits of a happier and more positive mind-set to achieve the extraordinary in our work and in our lives.

The Poet X
Elizabeth Acevedo

Fans of Jacqueline Woodson, Meg Medina, and Jason Reynolds will fall hard for this astonishing New York Times-bestselling novel-in-verse by an award-winning slam poet, about an Afro-Latina heroine who tells her story with blazing words and powerful truth.

Xiomara Batista feels unheard and unable to hide in her Harlem neighborhood. Ever since her body grew into curves, she has learned to let her fists and her fierceness do the talking.

But Xiomara has plenty she wants to say, and she pours all her frustration and passion onto the pages of a leather notebook, reciting the words to herself like prayers—especially after she catches feelings for a boy in her bio class named Aman, who her family can never know about.

With Mami’s determination to force her daughter to obey the laws of the church, Xiomara understands that her thoughts are best kept to herself. So when she is invited to join her school’s slam poetry club, she doesn’t know how she could ever attend without her mami finding out. But she still can’t stop thinking about performing her poems.

Because in the face of a world that may not want to hear her, Xiomara refuses to be silent.

Little Women
Louisa May Alcott

This American classic is as fresh and meaningful today as it was when it was first written in the 19th century. Largely based on the author's own childhood, "Little Women" is a timeless tale of the four young March sisters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy who grow to maturity in their mother's tender but strong care. As different in their personalities as they are alike in their devotion to each other, the girls vow to support their beloved mother, Marmee, by behaving their best while Father is away, serving as an army chaplain in the Civil War.

Literary-minded tomboy Jo develops a fast friendship with the boy next door, and pretty Meg, the eldest, finds romance; frail and affectionate Beth fills the house with music, and little Amy, the youngest, seeks beauty with all the longing of an artist's soul. Although poor in material wealth, the family possesses an abundance of love, friendship, and imaginative gifts that captivate readers time and again.

This inexpensive, complete and unabridged edition of this beloved novel is sure to delight a generation of new readers, as well as those reacquainting themselves with its warmth and charm.

The Inferno
Dante Alighieri

Translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Enter the unforgettable world of "The Inferno" and travel with a pair of poets through nightmare landscapes of eternal damnation to the very core of Hell. The first of the three major canticles in "La divina commedia" (The Divine Comedy), this fourteenth-century allegorical poem begins Dante's imaginary journey from Hell to Purgatory to Paradise. His encounters with historical and mythological creatures each symbolic of a particular vice or crime blend vivid and shocking imagery with graceful lyricism in one of the monumental works of world literature.

This acclaimed translation was rendered by the beloved nineteenth-century poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. A skilled linguist who taught modern languages at Harvard, Longfellow was among the first to make Dante s visionary poem accessible to American readers.

The Next Person

The Next Person You Meet in Heaven: The Sequel to The Five People You Meet in Heaven

In this enchanting sequel to the number one bestseller The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Mitch Albom tells the story of Eddie’s heavenly reunion with Annie—the little girl he saved on earth—in an unforgettable novel of how our lives and losses intersect.

Fifteen years ago, in Mitch Albom’s beloved novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, the world fell in love with Eddie, a grizzled war veteran- turned-amusement park mechanic who died saving the life of a young girl named Annie. Eddie’s journey to heaven taught him that every life matters. Now, in this magical sequel, Mitch Albom reveals Annie’s story.

The accident that killed Eddie left an indelible mark on Annie. It took her left hand, which needed to be surgically reattached. Injured, scarred, and unable to remember why, Annie’s life is forever changed by a guilt-ravaged mother who whisks her away from the world she knew. Bullied by her peers and haunted by something she cannot recall, Annie struggles to find acceptance as she grows. When, as a young woman, she reconnects with Paulo, her childhood love, she believes she has finally found happiness.

As the novel opens, Annie is marrying Paulo. But when her wedding night day ends in an unimaginable accident, Annie finds herself on her own heavenly journey—and an inevitable reunion with Eddie, one of the five people who will show her how her life mattered in ways she could not have fathomed.

Poignant and beautiful, filled with unexpected twists, The Next Person You Meet in Heaven reminds us that not only does every life matter, but that every ending is also a beginning—we only need to open our eyes to see it.

My Dream of Stars: From Daughter of Iran to Space Pioneer
By Anousheh Ansari and Homer Hickam

In her heartwarming and empowering memoir, space pioneer Anousheh Ansari tells the story of her childhood in Iran and her family's exodus to America after the Islamic Revolution. After settling down in Texas, Anousheh built a computer technology firm from the ground up, which eventually realized a net worth of $750 million and ultimately allowed her to achieve her childhood dream of spaceflight. In her groundbreaking role as the first-ever female commercial spaceflight participant, her story became politicized and fraught with the prejudices and obstacles she had to overcome as an Iranian woman, culminating in a debate over whether she would be allowed to display both the American and Iranian flags on the sleeve of her spacesuit.

After her return to Earth, Anousheh started The Ansari Foundation, a quickly growing nonprofit which supports social entrepreneurship, and is especially committed to ensuring the freedom of women around the world and supporting female entrepreneurs. Ultimately, this evocative story shows the triumph of a woman who has become a role model to people around the globe struggling to overcome economic and cultural barriers, as well as those dreamers who look upon the stars and wish to soar among them.

The Assassination
of Brangwain
Spurge M.T. Anderson

Subverting convention, award-winning creators M. T. Anderson and Eugene Yelchin pair up for an anarchic, outlandish, and deeply political saga of warring elf and goblin kingdoms.

Uptight elfin historian Brangwain Spurge is on a mission: survive being catapulted across the mountains into goblin territory, deliver a priceless peace offering to their mysterious dark lord, and spy on the goblin kingdom — from which no elf has returned alive in more than a hundred years. Brangwain’s host, the goblin archivist Werfel, is delighted to show Brangwain around. They should be the best of friends, but a series of extraordinary double crosses, blunders, and cultural misunderstandings throws these two bumbling scholars into the middle of an international crisis that may spell death for them — and war for their nations.

Witty mixed media illustrations show Brangwain’s furtive missives back to the elf kingdom, while Werfel’s determinedly unbiased narrative tells an entirely different story. A hilarious and biting social commentary that could only come from the likes of National Book Award winner M. T. Anderson and Newbery Honoree Eugene Yelchin, this tale is rife with thrilling action and visual humor . . . and a comic disparity that suggests the ultimate victor in a war is perhaps not who won the battles, but who gets to write the history.

Emma
Jane Austen

When her former governess finds happiness as the bride of a local widower, the brilliant and beautiful Emma Woodhouse one of Jane Austen's immortal creations flatters herself that she alone has secured the marriage and that she possesses a special talent for bringing lovers together. The young heiress next busies herself with finding a suitable husband for her friend and protege, Harriet Smith, setting off an entertaining sequence of comic mishaps and misunderstanding in this sparkling comedy of English-village romance. Beneath its considerable wit, the novel is also the story of a young woman's progress toward self-understanding.

"Emma" abounds in the droll character sketches at which Jane Austen excelled. In addition to the well-intentional heroine and her hypochondriacal father, the village of Highbury during the Regency period is populated by an amusing circle of friends and family kindhearted but tedious Miss Bates, a chatterbox spinster; ambitious Mr. Elton, a social-climbing parson; Frank Churchill, an enigmatic Romeo; Mr. Knightley, Emma's brother-in-law and the voice of her better nature; and a cluster of other finely drawn, unforgettable personalities.

The author's skill at depicting the follies of human nature in a manner both realistic and affectionate elevates this tale of provincial matchmaking to the heights of scintillating satire. A classic of English literature that has delighted readers since its 1816 publication, the novel is now available in this high-quality, inexpensive edition sure to charm a new generation.

Meditations
Marcus Aurelius

One of the world's most famous and influential books, Meditations, by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (A.D. 121 180), incorporates the stoic precepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in A.D. 161, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness

Reflecting the emperor's own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct, this eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one's personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of inevitable pain, loss, and death the suffering at the core of life Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one's control and a focus on one's own will and perception.

Presented here in a specially modernized version of the classic George Long translation, this updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century but also offers today's readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life.

Persuasion
Jane Austen

First published in 1818, Persuasion was Jane Austen's last work. Its mellow character and autumnal tone have long made it a favorite with Austen readers. Set in Somersetshire and Bath, the novel revolves around the lives and love affair of Sir Walter Elliot, his daughters Elizabeth, Anne, and Mary, and various in-laws, friends, suitors, and other characters, In Anne Elliot, the author created perhaps her sweetest, most appealing heroine.

At the center of the novel is Anne's thwarted romance with Captain Frederick Wentworth, a navy man Anne met and fell in love with when she was 19. At the time, Wentworth was deemed an unsuitable match and Anne was forced to break off the relationship. Eight years later, however, they meet again. By this time Captain Wentworth has made his fortune in the navy and is an attractive "catch." However, Anne is now uncertain about his feelings for her. But after various twists and turns of fortune, the novel ends on a happy note.

In Persuasion, as in such novels as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma, Austen limned the plight of young women who could escape the constraints of family life only by marrying, and suggest the foolishness of women who believed they were free and not dependent on the financial and social resources of men. At the same time, Persuasion offers an ironic and subtle paean to the true love that enables one woman to rise above straitened economic circumstances and the stifling social conventions that restricted women to narrowly circumscribed lives in the common sitting room.

Sure to appeal to admirers of Jane Austen, Persuasion will delight any reader with its finely drawn characters, gentle satire, and charming re-creation of the genteel world of the 19th-century English countryside.
